Liposuction is used to selectively remove deposits around the neck, to slim hips and thighs, flatten the abdomen and eliminate "love handles". Liposuction can also be used to contour upper arms, the inner knees, calves and ankles, the back, breast or chest area. Liposuction can sculpt disproportionate areas of body fat resistant to exercise or even weight reduction.
Liposuction is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure.
Tumescent Liposuction
Philadelphia liposuction specialist, Dr. Bottger, uses leading-edge tumescent
liposuction techniques. Tumescent liposuction involves the use of a very
dilute solution of local anesthesia and adrenaline to both numb the area
and to decrease bleeding in the body site where liposuction is performed.
The tumescent solution is injected into the tissues prior to liposuction.
The fat tissue receives enough solution that it actually plumps up and temporarily
enlarges the fat compartments prior to liposuction, or "tumesces" them.
Small diameter cannulae are then used to gently aspirate the fat. The tumescent
technique results in much less bleeding allowing safer and more accurate
removal of larger fat volumes with a more rapid recovery.
Methods
Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL): This method of liposuction uses an ultrasound cannula, which emulsifies the fat with sound waves. This is then followed with suction assisted liposuction to remove the fat. Dr. Bottger believes that this technique offers no significant advantage over suction assisted liposuction and is potentially associated with increased complications such as the necessity of more and larger incision scars and the possibility of skin burns and fluid collections (seroma).
Power Assisted Liposuction: This method uses a power source to cause a reciprocating motion of the cannula to help break up fat. Although this technique may reduce the work of the surgeon, it does not appear to offer any significant advantages in terms of results.
Suction Assisted Liposuction: This method utilizes a small cannula or tube inserted under the skin through a small incision (less than 1/4 of an inch) and connected to a suction machine. The emulsification and removal of fat is produced by a back and forth motion with the cannula.
Dr. Bottger prefers using the tumescent technique with suction assisted liposuction for the most predictable results.
Liposuction can be used to treat a variety of areas, including:
